Chapter 5 of Battle Hard After 50 argues power deserves its own training domain, not a footnote inside strength work. Here is the cross-sectional evidence on how fast it fades, the fiber-composition study on why staying generally active does not cover it, the review that partly undercuts the case, and the full broad-jump-to-sit-to-stand progression.
Chapter 5 of Battle Hard After 50 makes an argument most training programs skip entirely: speed is a separate quality from strength, it appears to fade faster, and almost nothing in an ordinary week ever asks you to find out.
The Number Nobody Tests Until It's Gone
Chapter 2 of the book hands you a standing broad jump number. Chapter 5 is the case for why that one test earns its own domain instead of getting folded into general strength work.
The chapter's anchor is a study of healthy adults aged 65 to 89 that measured strength and power separately. Across that age range, the difference in isometric strength between the youngest and oldest groups was equivalent to roughly one to two percent per year. The difference in leg extensor power was equivalent to closer to three and a half percent per year — and the gap between the two was statistically significant in men, but not in women.
The book is deliberate about what that does and does not mean. That study was cross-sectional — a snapshot across ages, not the same people tracked forward through time. It shows a pattern across an age range; it does not follow one man's power output down a curve. What it supports is a claim about direction, not a personal forecast: the evidence suggests power can decline faster than strength as men age.
The same study also found that power standardized to bodyweight tracked with how quickly people could rise from a low chair — not a lab abstraction, but the thing you do a dozen times a day without thinking about it.
Why Staying Generally Active Doesn't Cover This
The chapter's second citation is the one that changes how you read your own training week. Researchers compared muscle-fiber composition in lifelong strength-trained master athletes over 70 against lifelong endurance-trained athletes and recreationally active older adults, with young active adults as a reference group.
The strength-trained group looked remarkably like the young reference group — similar proportion of fast-twitch type II fibers, similar fiber-type grouping, and essentially no atrophic fibers. The endurance-trained and recreationally active older men showed more atrophic fibers, more fiber grouping, and a smaller proportion of type II fibers.
The chapter's read on that is careful: this is not evidence that being active does not matter. It is evidence that the fibers responsible for quick, forceful movement appear to need a specific kind of demand placed on them — and walking, steady cardio, and an active job do not reliably supply it.
What Training Does, and What It Doesn't Promise
Here the chapter does something unusual for a fitness book: it reports the evidence that undercuts its own pitch.
A meta-analysis pooling 12 randomized controlled trials in adults 50 and older found resistance training had a small-to-moderate effect on lower-extremity muscle power, and that higher-velocity training — moving lighter loads fast rather than heavy loads slowly — outperformed traditional slow-tempo training in that analysis.
Then the chapter puts the counterweight on the same page. A more recent systematic review of 19 trials in adults over 60 compared high-velocity power training directly against traditional resistance training on functional outcomes. It found a weak-to-moderate effect on two measures and considerable uncertainty on the rest, and concluded the two approaches had broadly similar effects — with the authors noting it is unclear whether the advantage is large enough to be clinically worthwhile.
Power responds to training at your age, the effect is real, and high-velocity work looks promising — but it isn't a guaranteed cure-all for every functional outcome, and this book isn't going to claim it is.
The chapter also mentions a small study — 13 adults averaging 54 — where six weeks of high-intensity interval cycling produced mechanical efficiency matching a young-adult group, driven substantially by gains in maximal power output. It uses that for one narrow point: six weeks is enough time for a real physiological change to show up in this quality, in people close to that age. It is explicitly not a prediction about your own retest number.
The Progression
Every movement in the book runs through the same five columns, and power is no exception.
- Mission Standard — standing broad jump. Feet hip width, dip to a quarter squat, jump forward as far as you can, land under control on both feet. The same test from Chapter 2.
- Field Version — fast sit-to-stand from a chair, standing as quickly as clean form allows, sitting back down under control. The chapter is explicit that this is the working version for most readers and not a lesser one: same intent to produce force quickly, both feet on the floor, no landing to manage.
- Scale Down — controlled-speed sit-to-stand from a chair with arms, hands on thighs or armrests only as much as you need. Pattern and confidence first; speed later.
- Progress — move up from Scale Down once you can stand without pushing off your thighs, under control, for three sets of eight. Move toward Mission Standard once you can complete three sets of eight fast sit-to-stands with a controlled descent on every rep. The book flags these set-and-rep figures as its own programming standards, not numbers pulled from the research above.
- Load It Up — the book does not load the broad jump. Dumbbells shift your center of mass and take away the arms you would otherwise use to catch yourself; a vest increases landing forces. Progress distance and landing quality instead, or add load through the step-up and sit-to-stand variations, where your feet stay in contact with the ground.
There is one optional progression — an explosive step-up — and the chapter gates it heavily, because it asks for one-legged force production, balance, and a controlled descent all at once, and a mistake on it is a fall rather than a missed rep. Earn slow, controlled step-ups first. Use a fixed, non-slip step no higher than mid-shin. And skip it entirely if you have had a recent fall, a balance problem, neuropathy, a fragility fracture or a diagnosis that raises that risk, a joint that is currently symptomatic, or any exertional symptom you have not had looked at. Nothing in the program requires it.
Landing Quality and the Rest Between Reps
Before progressing to a harder jumping variation, the chapter wants you to know what a bad landing looks like so you can catch it in yourself. Quiet, controlled, stable — knees tracking over your toes, hips absorbing the impact without collapsing inward or forward. Loud, knees caving in, or a stumbling step to catch your balance is a signal to drop back a column, not a form detail to shrug off.
Rest is the other half. The book programs 60 to 90 seconds between individual broad jumps — again flagged as its own conservative standard rather than a figure drawn from the studies — and for grounded sit-to-stand variations, runs the reps as a normal set and stops when speed or form clearly drops. The reasoning is simple: if rep five looks noticeably worse than rep one, fatigue crept in and the session quietly turned into conditioning work. Both have value. They are not the same training stimulus, and this is the one fatigue destroys fastest.
Retest
Broad jump again at the twelve-week mark, alongside the rest of the Chapter 13 battery — same protocol, same footwear. If the number has not moved, the chapter asks you to troubleshoot honestly rather than assume one cause: measurement variation between two jumps, technique, recovery, adherence, or an underlying issue worth mentioning to a doctor can all play a role.
Fast is one of the more trainable qualities the book covers, based on what is currently in the research. You just have to actually ask your body for it — with real intent, and real rest to let that intent mean something.
