HEART RATE ZONE CALCULATOR FOR OVER 50

Enter your age to see estimated max heart rate by two published formulas, side by side, and the training zones that follow. Add a resting heart rate or a tested max to sharpen it.

Resting heart rate: count your pulse for a full minute after waking, before you get up. Leave the boxes empty if you don't know.

PUT IT TO WORK

QUESTIONS

WHAT IS MY MAX HEART RATE AT 50, 60 OR 70?+

By the Tanaka formula (208 − 0.7 × age), about 173 at 50, 166 at 60 and 159 at 70. By 220 − age, 170, 160 and 150. In a study of 762 adults, both formulas missed measured max heart rate by a standard error of about 11 to 12 beats a minute, so your real number can be well above or below either estimate.

WHAT IS ZONE 2 HEART RATE FOR A 60-YEAR-OLD?+

In the five-zone model this calculator uses (from The Clydesdale Protocol), Zone 2 is 61% to 70% of max. With a Tanaka estimate of 166, that is about 101 to 116 beats a minute. Zone models differ between sources, and the cutoffs are a training model, not research thresholds.

WHY ARE THERE TWO FORMULAS?+

220 − age is the long-standing rule of thumb. Tanaka and colleagues' 2001 meta-analysis of 351 studies produced 208 − 0.7 × age and reported that the older formula underestimates max heart rate in older adults. The calculator shows both so you can see how much they differ at your age.

WHAT IF I TAKE A BETA-BLOCKER?+

Beta-blockers lower heart rate, and age-based formulas were built on people not taking them. In one study of heart patients on beta-blockers, a different equation fit, with a standard error of about 18 beats a minute. Formula zones don't apply; ask your physician how to gauge effort.

HOW DO I FIND MY REAL MAX HEART RATE?+

A supervised exercise test measures it. The Clydesdale Protocol describes a field test for athletes cleared for hard efforts. Talk with your physician before any all-out test, especially with heart symptoms or a heart condition.
