Grip is three separate qualities, and the dynamometer test measures the one Chapter 6 doesn't train. Loaded carries, the supported dead hang, and the claims the chapter deliberately refuses to make about grip strength and mortality.
Chapter 6 of Battle Hard After 50 opens on a specific kind of failure: a man who can run a respectable mile and hold a decent plank, whose hands give out on a heavy bag of mulch long before his legs or his lungs enter the conversation.
The chapter's read on that is blunt. It isn't a contradiction. Grip strength and aerobic capacity are largely independent systems trained by different demands — and most men's weeks are full of demands on one and almost none on the other.
Three Kinds of Grip, and Why the Test and the Training Aren't the Same Thing
This is the part of the chapter that reframes the whole domain, and it's the part most training advice skips. Grip strength isn't one quality. It's three.
- Crush grip — closing your fingers against resistance. Squeezing a hand gripper. Squeezing a dynamometer as hard as you can for a few seconds.
- Support grip — maintaining a closed grip against a sustained load. Hanging from a bar. Carrying something heavy for distance, where your fingers stay closed around the object the whole time rather than actively squeezing harder against it.
- Pinch grip — holding something between thumb and fingers without wrapping your whole hand around it. Picking a plate up off the floor by its edge.
The book's assessment chapter measures a dynamometer score. That's a crush-grip number. Almost everything Chapter 6 then trains — loaded carries and supported hangs — is support grip.
They're related but not identical qualities, which is exactly why this chapter exists as its own training focus rather than assuming a stronger crush-grip test score automatically means your carrying capacity has improved too.
What the Chapter Refuses to Claim
The anchor citation here is the PURE study — Leong and colleagues, published in The Lancet in 2015. It enrolled 142,861 participants across 17 countries; 139,691 with known vital status were analyzed over a median follow-up of four years, during which 3,379 died. Grip strength was inversely associated with all-cause mortality at a hazard ratio of 1.16 per 5 kg reduction in grip strength (95% CI 1.13–1.20), with cardiovascular mortality at 1.17 (1.11–1.24), and with myocardial infarction and stroke at 1.07 and 1.09 respectively. The study reported grip strength as a stronger predictor of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality than systolic blood pressure, in the same dataset, using the same methods.
The chapter is careful about what that does and doesn't mean, and it's worth reproducing that care rather than the headline. It doesn't mean blood pressure is unimportant — it's one of the most consequential numbers in cardiovascular medicine. It means a genuinely cheap, thirty-second test carried predictive signal that stood up statistically well against a measurement your doctor treats as central.
And on the bigger question, the chapter declines the sale outright. PURE found an association between grip strength and mortality risk across a huge population. It did not test whether deliberately training your grip up reverses that risk, and the chapter says plainly that it isn't going to claim it does. What the training research does show is that resistance training can improve strength and grip measures in older adults who train them directly. The loaded-carry performance gains specifically haven't been isolated in the studies the chapter cites the way grip strength itself has.
The same restraint shows up on the everyday-function claim. Grip and carrying capacity feed into a real list of tasks — carrying your own groceries, catching a railing before a stumble becomes a fall, opening a stuck jar or a heavy door. The chapter explicitly won't say this domain determines whether your seventies and eighties are spent independent or dependent, because balance, aerobic capacity, bone health, cognition and vision all matter too. What it says instead is narrower and, honestly, enough: this is a real, trainable capacity that a lot of men neglect completely.
The Loaded Carry
MISSION STANDARD — Two-hand farmer's carry. Pick up a genuinely heavy weight in each hand — dumbbells, kettlebells, loaded jugs, whatever you have — stand tall with your shoulders back, and walk sixty feet without setting the weight down, without your posture collapsing forward, and without your grip failing before the distance is covered.
FIELD VERSION — Suitcase carry. Same movement, one side at a time, a single weight in one hand for the same distance, then switched. The chapter is specific that this is not simply an easier version: carrying one-sided forces your core and obliques to resist the pull to one side, a genuinely different stability demand. It's a lower-total-load, unilateral variation, not a strictly easier one.
SCALE DOWN — Shorter suitcase carry at a lighter load, twenty to thirty feet, focused entirely on keeping your shoulders level and your trunk upright rather than letting the weight pull you sideways.
PROGRESS — move up a column when you complete the full distance with shoulders staying level, trunk upright, and grip holding through the entire carry. Not barely making the finish with your form falling apart in the last ten feet.
LOAD IT UP — heavier at the same distance, or the same load carried farther, once the Mission Standard is genuinely clean.
The chapter flags its own numbers honestly: the sixty feet and the twenty-to-thirty feet are WPP programming standards, not figures drawn from a validated population norm. A reasonable, workable structure — not a scientifically established distance requirement.
The Cue That Matters More Than the Weight
Shoulders back and down, not shrugged toward your ears. Ribcage stacked over your hips, not leaning back to counterbalance the load. A normal walking stride, not a shuffle — a stride that shortens specifically because of the weight is often the first sign the load is heavier than your current trunk control can manage cleanly.
Then the line worth carrying out of this chapter: end the set the moment any of that breaks down, not when your hands physically let go. Grip failure is the last thing to go wrong, not the first useful signal that something's off.
The Dead Hang, Started Correctly
Start supported, not at full bodyweight. Set a box, step or low bench under the bar so your feet stay in contact and your legs carry as much of your weight as you need them to. Arms extended, shoulders active rather than collapsed — your shoulder blades should be doing work, not your joints simply hanging. That supported version is the default in the book, and for a lot of readers it stays the version they use.
Progress by taking weight off your legs a little at a time. Build toward thirty to sixty total seconds accumulated across multiple sets rather than chasing one long all-out hold — an all-out hang ends when your grip fails, and a grip that fails at full bodyweight drops you.
Stop the set for shoulder pain, numbness or tingling in the hands, a feeling of instability in the shoulder, or any loss of controlled shoulder position. If you have a history of shoulder dislocation or instability, ongoing shoulder or elbow pain, or hand numbness, the chapter's instruction is to treat hanging as something to clear with a qualified professional first — the loaded carries train support grip perfectly well without it. And a doorway bar needs to be installed as the manufacturer intends and rated for your bodyweight.
No Gym Required
A pair of full water jugs, a loaded backpack carried by the top handle rather than worn, or two grocery bags loaded with cans all work as legitimate farmer's-carry implements — as long as the load is genuinely challenging over the distance and the handles are sturdy enough to trust with real weight. Test any improvised implement with a short, light-effort carry first. A bag handle that tears or a jug that cracks mid-carry is a foreseeable problem.
On Frequency — Another Claim the Chapter Won't Make
There's a popular rule that short, frequent grip sessions beat one longer weekly session. The chapter says the evidence it cites doesn't establish that, and then shows its work.
A trial by DiFrancisco-Donoghue and colleagues, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine in 2007, randomized 18 adults aged 65 to 79 to one set of exercises to muscular fatigue either once or twice weekly for nine weeks. There was a significant main effect of time on one-repetition maximum scores, but no group effect and no interaction — no difference in strength change between training once a week and twice a week. Eighteen people over nine weeks is a small trial, and worth reading as such.
A larger randomized controlled trial by Richardson and colleagues, in the European Journal of Sport Science in 2019, put 54 resistance-naïve adults aged 60 to 79 into five arms over ten weeks: high-velocity low-load and low-velocity high-load, each once or twice weekly, plus a no-exercise control. Fifty completed. Only the low-velocity high-load twice-weekly arm improved 30-second chair stand, arm curls and grip strength versus control, and improved maximal strength on seven of eight exercises. The once-weekly high-load arm and the twice-weekly high-velocity arm each improved only two exercises.
That's a finding about training style and dose, not proof that more frequent short sessions beat fewer, more substantial ones. The chapter's honest position: consistency and genuine loading matter more than a specific session count. One to two meaningful exposures weekly, with real effort in each, is the book's programming standard here — labeled as a schedule most men can actually keep, not a figure either study proved superior.
What to Track
Retest the grip number and the loaded-carry distance at whatever interval you're using for the rest of your training. The chapter's closing framing is the useful one: the goal was never a competitive number. It's a number that stops declining and starts climbing — on a domain a lot of men have spent decades training almost everything except.
