HOW LONG YOU NAP MAY MATTER MORE THAN WHETHER YOU NAP AT ALL

Cohort studies consistently link naps over 30-60 minutes to meaningfully higher cardiovascular risk, while short naps show mixed results. The honest read on what this observational data can and can't tell you.

A short nap has a solid reputation as a recovery tool. The research on longer naps tells a more complicated story — and the length of the nap turns out to matter more than whether you nap at all.

What the Studies Actually Found

Several large cohort studies and meta-analyses have looked at habitual daytime napping and cardiovascular outcomes, and a consistent pattern shows up around the 30-minute mark. A dose-response meta-analysis found napping longer than 30 minutes associated with a 44% higher risk of cardiovascular disease compared to no napping, while shorter naps carried a smaller, less consistent association. Separate cohort data found naps of 60 minutes or more associated with roughly 1.2 to 1.8 times the risk of cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality compared to non-nappers, depending on the study population. A study specifically in older adults found long nappers — above a median of about 44 minutes — had 1.73 times the risk of developing heart failure compared to short nappers.

What This Doesn't Prove

This is observational data, not a controlled trial, and the distinction matters more here than in most nutrition or exercise research. Nobody randomized people into "nap 45 minutes daily" versus "don't nap" and tracked outcomes for a decade — these are cohort studies that follow people's existing habits. That leaves real room for reverse causation: people with early, undiagnosed cardiovascular or metabolic disease often feel more fatigued and nap longer because they're already unwell, not the other way around. Sleep apnea, depression, and poor nighttime sleep quality — all of which independently raise cardiovascular risk — are also more common in people who nap for long stretches, and not every study fully separates those effects out.

The evidence on short naps (under 30 minutes) is genuinely mixed between studies — some show a small elevated risk, others show none. The long-nap finding is the more consistent one across the literature.

The Practical Takeaway

The data doesn't support "never nap." A short nap — the classic 20-to-30-minute window — has decent evidence behind it for alertness and recovery without the same cardiovascular association showing up consistently. What's worth paying attention to is a pattern of routinely needing 45+ minutes to feel functional during the day, especially if it's a new habit — that's less likely to be a harmless preference and more worth mentioning to a doctor, since it can be an early signal of something else going on rather than the cause of a problem itself.
